The Foot Care Specialists
Amanda Scott-Barker BSc (Hons) MRCPod - has a wealth of experience and expertise in all areas of chiropody and podiatry, and will assess, diagnose and prescribe the correct course of treatment to suit you.
What is a podiatrist?
A podiatrist is an Allied Health Professional (AHP). They undertake a three-year undergraduate diploma or degree in podiatric medicine. Once qualified they can assess, diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of foot, ankle, and lower limb conditions.
Is a podiatrist the same as a chiropodist?
Yes, the two terms are used interchangeably, and although podiatry has always been used in other countries, it is only over recent years that it has been used within the UK.
It is important to note that all Podiatrists/Chiropodists must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), a regulatory body whose function is to set and maintain standards of 15 health care professions, with the objective to protect the public.
If you wish to check that the person providing your foot care treatment is registered, their details can be checked on the HCPC register at hcpc-uk.org
When should I see a podiatrist?
Podiatrists can help with a wide range of foot complaints.
General nail and skin care: Feet are not easy places to reach at the best of times, but other medical conditions such as arthritis in the hands reduces strength making nails difficult to cut. Heart and respiratory conditions can cause breathlessness when bending to reach the feet. Poor eyesight reduces what we can see of our feet.
Diabetes and peripheral vascular disease increases the risk of non healing wounds and infection on the feet and is best managed by those with experience with these conditions
Hard Skin • Corns • Verrucas • Painful toenails • Infected and ingrown toenails • Deformity and thickened toenails • Arthritic feet • Ligament and soft tissue Pain • Bunion and toe deformities
Even if you present with a concern that either is not within our scope of practice or not our specialism, we often signpost you in the right direction to get the help you need.
And of course, you can always call the clinic to discuss your concerns prior to making that appointment.
